When you have finished watching the video, use the handout provided to highlight lines that you think should be changed, and then try your hand at rewriting them in the space provided! This activity is also fun to do collaboratively with a group, which might work better for younger learners!

  • Nancy's Cheongsam Coloring Page and Discussion Prompt: When Nancy Kwan appeared in a yellow cheongsam, a traditional Chinese dress, on the cover of Life magazine in 1960, she started a nationwide fashion trend. But wearing traditional clothing from other cultures as a fad or as a costume is not a respectful thing to do- it is called cultural appropriation. Watch a related video, then color the picture of Nancy Kwan provided. While you color, discuss what you learned in the video and whether you think Americans wearing cheongsams inspired by Nancy was cultural appropriation or cultural appreciation.
