Start by reading the entry on Chien-Shiung Wu, The First Lady of Physics, in the book, Revolutionary Women: 50 Women of Color Who Reinvented the Rules by Ann Shen. Then, expand on the reading with this creative and engaging lesson plan, featuring video resources, a discussion prompt, and fun and creative activities and worksheets. This lesson was designed to be appropriate and accessible for a wide range of elementary-aged learners, from K-6th grades and even beyond.

Included in this lesson

  • A recommended selection from Revolutionary Women: 50 Women of Color Who Reinvented the Rules by Ann Shen

  • A recommended video resource

  • Discussion prompt

  • Physics Experiment Activity Page: Celebrate Chien-Shiung Wu, the First Lady of Physics with a physics experiment! In her famous experiment, Wu observed the electrons in cobalt behaving differently depending on whether they spun the cobalt atoms clockwise or counterclockwise. This was a huge scientific breakthrough! We aren't going to be working with subatomic particles in our experiment, but we can still study the physics of two spinning objects and compare them, just like Dr. Wu did! Check out the instructions on the included handout.

  • Creative Cobalt Print-and-Go Activity: Dr. Wu's famous experiment can be difficult to understand- it is very advanced science! Let's help people understand the results of the experiment with a silly art prompt! Read through the instructions on the included handout to design your own cobalt atoms behaving differently.
