Bayard Rustin Elementary Lesson Plan
Let's celebrate Bayard Rustin!
Read A Song for the Unsung: Bayard Rustin, the Man Behind the 1963 March on Washington by Carole Boston Weatherford, Rob Sanders, and Byron McCray, then extend the learning with this lesson plan, featuring a fun student-illustrated memory game, original coloring page, and more! Bayard Rustin was the unsung hero of the March on Washington. But that's not the only time Bayard worked behind the scenes of major events in the Civil Rights Movement! In fact, nearly every major action of the civil rights era is in some way connected to Bayard Rustin's work. To explore these connections, students are invited to make a memory game where they will illustrate pairs of cards connecting a major event to Bayard's work. Once the cards are illustrated, students can cut them out and play memory, and share their game with family and friends to help educate others about Bayard Rustin's staggering contributions to the fight for equality and justice.
